TIGARD, Ore. --

A fire at an assisted living center Sunday night in Washington County displaced more than 80 people.

An employee at the Park Place Assisted Living Center on Southwest Hemlock Street called 911 at 10:01 p.m. to report that the building's roof was on fire.

A representative with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue said crews used ladders to reach the roof and they began to work to extinguish the fire. A second alarm was called minutes later.

Because many of the people who lived at the assisted living center needed medical equipment and medications, the evacuations were complicated, but went smoothly, fire officials said.

Several vans, ambulances and two TriMet buses were used to take the residents to other assisted living center facilities.

Three people were treated by paramedics at the scene and two were taken to area hospitals for further medical evaluation.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in the attic of the building.

An investigator is trying to determine the cause of the fire. The building sustained fire and smoke damage in the attic plus extensive water damage.
