BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. --

Baltimore County fire officials said they were able to pull a man who got stuck in a narrow hole to safety Thursday afternoon.

Fire Department spokeswoman Elise Armacost said crews were called to the 5200 block of McCormick Road in Rosedale shortly after 2 p.m. to find a man stuck in a hole about 2 feet in diameter.

The man told rescuers that he had taken a shortcut home from work through a barren piece of property notable for a large dirt hill when he fell into the hole and got stuck "like a cork in a bottle."

The man told responders that he was able to reach his cell phone and call 911.

It took crews about 40 minutes to get the man out. Armacost said he was conscious throughout the ordeal.

She said the man was taken to Shock Trauma with non-life-threatening injuries.
