LOUISVILLE, Ky. --

The Lake Dreamland Fire Department is trying to contain a chemical spill at an industrial plant.

Police confirmed the spill happened at the Dow Chemical Plant in the 4300 block of Campground Road. The streets surrounding the plant have been shut down.

Firefighters said the spill involves a leak of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical with the potential for an explosion.

It can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through skin and cause dizziness or suffocation, officials said. Workers said the chemical is highly flammable and can mix with the air.

Fire Capt. Jodie Meriman said the chemical vapors were released from a rail car within the plant.

Crews said heat causes vapors to release more quickly, making it harder for firefighters to contain the problem.

Health officials are monitoring the situation and no injuries have been reported.

Meriman said a "shelter in place" warning has been lifted. However, crews said everyone should stay inside until an all clear has been issued.
