LaVERGNE, Tenn. --

Two children were burned when a boat burst into flames along Percy Priest Lake Friday morning.

The blaze occurred near Jones Mills Road at Poole Knobs Recreation Area. The boat caught fire just as the family put it into the water and started the engine, said emergency officials.

Two children, 7- and 9-years-old, received second-degree burns to their legs, feet and ankles. The children's mother's boyfriend threw the kids into the water, got his three dogs off the boat and jumped into the lake. The LaVergne Fire Department then put out the fire.

The injured children were transported to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville.

Emergency crews had to put down booms to filter the oil and gas running out of the boat and prevent further contamination.

The fire marshal said the fire will most likely be ruled accidental, but the boat owner may have to pay for the cleanup.
