BROOMFIELD, Colo.
--
A semi-trailer carrying practice ordinance crashed into a cement barrier on Interstate 25 early Wednesday.
The accident happened at 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-25 near state Highway 7 when the truck was moving through a construction area and hit a Jersey barrier, ripping open a saddle fuel tank on the tractor trailer.
A passenger in the cab of the tractor trailer rig was injured in the crash.
When firefighters arrived and saw the cargo of military ammunition, the bomb squad was called in.
The truck was carrying 10 pallets with 48 practice rockets. The nearly 3-inch diameter rockets are used on helicopters to practice air-to-ground gunnery, according to Lt. Col. Steve Wollman, a Fort Carson spokesman.
The Adams County Bomb Squad checked the shipment and declared the rockets safe.
Another truck was sent to pick up the rockets.
The truck driver was cited for careless driving causing injury, Broomfield police said.
Authorities wouldn't say where the practice rockets were headed.
