KENNER, La.
--
A garbage truck collapsed through the concrete surface of a street in Kenner on Tuesday, getting stuck in a large hole and trapping a worker there.
City officials said the truck belonged to the city's private contractor, Ramelli Janitorial Service. It fell through the street in the 200 block of 27th Street around 7:25 a.m., according to a news release.
One of the workers who empties garbage cans into the back of the truck fell off and became wedged between it and the mud below the street. Firefighters had to use hand shovels to dig the man out.
The worker, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, city officials said.
A wrecking crew extracted the truck from the hole, which is 30 feet long and 10 feet wide. That section of 27th Street, between Fayette and Salem streets, remains closed except to residents until crews can inspect and stabilize the road.
