SISTERS, Ore. --

A Salem man crashed his SUV through a guardrail and went 300 feet down an embankment Thursday, police said.

Peter Chamberlain, 50, survived the wreck, said an Oregon State Police spokesman.

Chamberlain lost control of his 2002 GMC Yukon at about 9:45 a.m., according to Sgt. Derek Bischoff. The SUV went through the railing and down the embankment before coming to a stop at the bottom of a hill.

Bischoff showed up at the crash scene three minutes later and made his way down to the SUV. Firefighters and Deschutes County rescue crews were able to pull Chamberlain out of the car so he could be taken to a hospital.

An ambulance took Chamberlain to St. Charles Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Police are still trying to determine if he wore a seat belt in the crash.

Chamberlain turns 51 years old tomorrow.
