MARION COUNTY, Fla. --

Firefighters from four stations responded to the 1900 block of Highway 326 Saturday morning after they learned an elderly man had fallen in to the wooded ditch.

The Marion County Technical Rescue Team went out to the scene to remove the patient by creating a rope rescue system.

Fire Rescue officials told Local 6 they were able to reach the bottom of the quarry safely with the aid of the ropes, using a transverse rescue.

That type of rescue is considered to be one of the most complex types of rope rescues due to the high level of tension placed on the ropes, officials told Local 6.

The elderly man was rescued safely at 1:38 p.m.

The patient was flown to Shands Healthcare after complaining of back pain and numbness in one leg.

Marion County Fire Rescue’s Technical Rescue Team is one of two special operations teams for the department.

Team members specialize in and are highly trained to conduct extensive extrications, rope, cave and confined space rescues as well as wilderness search and rescues.
