CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --

Cedar Rapids fire officials said a garage collapsed on two workers, seriously injuring one of the men.

Fire department spokesman Greg Buelow said emergency workers on Saturday used air bags to raise the roof and remove a 60-year-old man whose lower extremities were pinned beneath the garage for about 20 minutes. The victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital with potentially serious injuries.

Workers also cut a hole in the roof to extricate Sam Cooper, 24, of California, who was uninjured and refused medical treatment.

Buelow said the men were part of a nine-member AmeriCorps team that was helping to tear down the structure damaged by last summer's flood. He said they were knocking out the garage siding just before 9 a.m. when the structure collapsed.
