RONDA --
An early morning fire on Sunday in Ronda sent firefighters from three departments to battle a blaze at the Nance family residence off of Chatham Road.
The Nance family dog, Daisy, escaped serious injury when the heat lamp inside her doghouse caught fire. Matt Nance was sleeping on the end of the house adjacent to the blaze and he woke to the popping of the fire. He sounded the alarm and woke his parents and sister.
The storage building beside the dog run had also caught fire and the family rushed to get Daisy out of her enclosure as the building was used to store race car fuel and diesel fuel.
The fire was so hot that it melted and buckled the vinyl siding on the end of the home adjacent to the storage building.
“It hit that fuel and everything just went,” said Sandy Nance, mother to Matt. Both Mr. Nance and one of their sons race. “My lawnmower was in there too,” said Sandy.
Firefighters from Ronda, Pleasant Hill and Roaring River all responded.
“Several of our firemen were in fire school at the college today,” said Ronda Asst. Chief Darren Jordan. “We had enough close by to respond.”
The blaze was brought under control before the home caught fire. Firefighters used a thermal imaging device to ensure there was no heat registering in the walls of the home. Jordan said the thermal imaging saves the homeowners money when they can see there is no fire inside the walls and firefighters don’t have to remove siding to check inside the walls for heat. “It’s expensive,” said Jordan, “but it saves lives.”
There were no damage estimates available prior to press time.
