N.C. Retirement Home Fire Kills One

SYLVA, N.C. -- One person was killed and another person was injured during a fire at a retirement home in Jackson County on Sunday morning. The blaze happened at the Jackson Village at about 2 a.m. Firefighters said that a breezeway connecting the apartments caught fire, destroying four units. Forest Aikens, 76, lived in one of those four units and was killed.

One person was killed and another person was injured during a fire at a retirement home in Jackson County on Sunday morning.

The blaze happened at the Jackson Village at about 2 a.m.

Firefighters said that a breezeway connecting the apartments caught fire, destroying four units.

Forest Aikens, 76, lived in one of those four units and was killed.

Another person was forced to jump from the second story to escape the blaze. That person suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
