WESTON, Fla. --

A swarm of bees apparently killed a beagle that was tied to a tree outside a Weston home Tuesday morning, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The dog's owner told police that the 6-year-old beagle was tied to a palm tree in the 2500 block of Jardin Lane to get some fresh air. When the owner checked on the animal, he saw a swarm of bees around the dog.

BSO said the dog was unresponsive, and the owner called Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

Firefighters wearing protective gear removed the dog from the area where the bees were, but the dog was already dead.

Police said a palm frond apparently fell to the ground, disturbing a beehive. It is unclear whether the beehive was in the tree or on the ground when it was disturbed.

Animal Care and Regulation officers were called to the scene.
