With a trailer fire burning out of control Tuesday, a man risked his life trying to save those inside.
Steve Meibers, 47, lives just around the corner from where the blaze began, and when the call for help went out, he threw caution to the wind, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Mike Petchenik reported.
When Meibers arrived at the home, he found two collapsed children clinging to life and their distraught mother screaming for those trapped inside. He said he knew exactly what to do.
"I couldn't get in the front door, so I just ran around back and gave it a swift kick," Meibers said Tuesday afternoon at University Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. "I tried going up the hallway. I could hear my hair sizzling."
Gasping for air, Meibers refused to give up. He went back for another rescue attempt, Petchenik reported.
"I ran out, tried to go through the front door and couldn't get in," he said. "By the time I ran out again, the flames were shooting out the back. I knew there was nothing else I could do."
Meibers said he was willing to risk his life so that others could live.
"I didn't even think about myself," he said. "I figured I've lived 47 years. If I could get that baby in the living room, that would be good."
