An off-duty firefighter rescued a fisherman from the water near the docks of Diversey Harbor this afternoon while paramedics responded to the scene, according to fire media information.
Shortly before 4 p.m., firefighters were alerted about a person in the water at Diversey Parkway, according to a spokesman.
An off-duty Chicago firefighter, Bill Miller, also was fishing on the dock when he saw the victim fall into the water.
Miller, a 6-year veteran of the department, held the victim up until paramedics arrived at the scene, according to Fire Department spokesman Rich Rosado.
The man was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in serious-to-critical condition. As of 5:45 p.m., his condition was stabilized at the hospital.
