The man was halfway out in the middle of the river, holding onto the tip of the kayak.

A kayaker was rescued Thursday afternoon from Great Egg Harbor Bay off Egg Harbor Township.

Assistant Chief John Webb said the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company responded to a call at about 3:45 p.m. off Jeffers Landing Road.

"I looked out on the water and a man was halfway out in the middle of the river, holding onto the tip of the kayak," he said. "The rest of it was submerged under water."

Scullville firefighters deployed the company's hovercraft to pick the kayaker up and return him to shore. The victim was transported to Shore Medical Center for treatment.

Webb said the victim told responders he had been out in the water for nearly 45 minutes.

Webb said the victim was awake and coherent, but had suffered from hypothermia.

His identity was being withheld pending notification of family.
