Oklahoma City Fire Department Maj. Tim Long has pulled cats out of trees and rescued ducks from drains, but he helped pull a puppy out of a well for the first time Friday.

Nala, a mixed breed puppy, fell 20 feet into an abandoned well Friday afternoon in the backyard 3905 NW 56 the dog's owner, Nicholas Cadle said.

Cadle had let Nala into the yard so she could go to the bathroom. When he came out to check on the puppy, she was out of sight, whimpering. Nala had fallen into a PVC pipe roughly five inches in diameter, firefighters said.

Cadle tried to dig into the well but wasn't having any luck. He called 911. Firefighters arrived and called animal control. Working together, they rigged an animal snare with rope, pipe and other tools to reach Nala.

About 45 minutes later, the mission was a success.

Cadle said Nala is doing fine.

"They did an excellent job," he said. "I don't think anyone knew what to expect."
