A man was seriously injured Monday after he fell on the train tracks at the Pershing Square Metro station in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.
Authorities believe the man was intoxicated when he fell off the Red Line platform at Pershing Square about 1:30 p.m., said Metro spokesman Marc Littman. He then managed to roll under the platform to avoid an oncoming train.
Crews de-energized the tracks, and firefighters were able to pull the man out, said Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. The man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The specifics of the injuries were not known, but Scott said the man was conscious at the scene.
Initial information indicated he was hit by a train, but that was not the case, officials said.
The incident caused 20-minute delays that lasted until about 2:15 p.m., Littman said.
