Firefighters rescued a Jack Russell terrier trapped in a gopher hole that had caved in Monday night in Morriston.
Crews responded to 2850 Southeast 132 Court after receiving reports around 2:30 p.m. of a small dog named Penny falling down the hole, according to a news release from Williston Fire Rescue.
Firefighters from Williston, Levy County and members of a technical rescue team from Marion County began digging in the direction of the tunnel in order to enlarge the diameter of the hole and reduce the chance of collapse.
Firefighters continued digging in an effort to find the tunnel until around 8:30 p.m.
A very faint whimper could be heard and crews dug for another foot before finding the tunnel. They then began using their hands to prevent the tunnel from collapsing.
At approximately 8:43 p.m., one of the members of the members of the Marion County technical rescue team was able to reach deep into the hole and find Penny.
He grabbed the dog by the head and pulled her out.
The dog was very weak, but was returned to her owner and is said to be doing fine.
