Firefighters rescued a construction worker who fell down an elevator shaft Wednesday morning in Palo Alto.

The 46-year-old man fell through an opening on the second floor of a building being renovated at VMware, 3401 Hillview Ave., just before 8:45 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Doug Conn of the Palo Alto Fire Department. He landed in an elevator pit some 25 feet below.

Firefighters performed a "confined space rescue" and paramedics treated the man for his injuries, according to Conn. He was then transported to Stanford Hospital for additional treatment.
