GRAYLING — A 38-year-old Grayling woman, Senta Duncan, and her 5-year-old son, Wyatt Duncan, died in a Wednesday morning structure fire, according to the Grayling City Police.
Four other children, ages 8 to 15, who were staying at the residence, were able to escape to safety.
Chief of Police Doug Baum said Wednesday the Grayling City Fire Department and officers from his department responded to the blaze that destroyed the residence at 708 Vine St.
First responders arrived to find the single-story structure engulfed in flames and were notified a woman and child were still inside. One of the family’s pet dogs was found deceased inside the structure.
Once the fire was extinguished, responders found Duncan and her son deceased in a bedroom.
The four children who escaped the home were transported to Grayling Mercy Hospital by MMR Ambulance for smoke inhalation. They were later treated and released.
Baum said the home was a complete loss.
The fire was believed to have started in the living room.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Gaylord Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit, Grayling City Police and the Grayling City Fire Department.
Assisting at the scene were the Beaver Creek Fire Department, Frederic Fire Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.
Baum said the Crawford County Department of Human Services, 348-7691, is accepting donations on behalf of the survivors of the tragedy.
