NEW CARROLLTON, Md. (WUSA)-- An investigation is underway into a fire that claimed two lives Sunday night in New Carrollton, Md.
Prince George's County firefighters responded to the 7600 block of Fountainbleau Drive around 7:45 p.m. and saw flames shooting out of a three-story garden style apartment.
One adult was found dead inside the apartment where the fire started. The other person jumped about 40 feet from the balcony.
The adult who jumped from the balcony was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead as a result of injuries from the jump.
Police and fire investigators believe the fire is suspicious because of some of the 911 calls they received.
Witnesses say they saw a person climbing down from the apartment where the fire started but officials have not been able to speak with that person.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. About 50 residents will be displaced as a result of the fire damage. The identity of the victims has not been released.
