Two Men Rescued From Iowa Grain Bin

Two men were performing maintenance at a Waverly grain mill when they became trapped in a bin filled with up to 10 feet of grain. Firefighters cut the bin to extricate the men.

March 14--WAVERLY, Iowa -- Two men were extricated from a grain bin and transported to Waverly Health Center in undisclosed condition, fire officials said here this afternoon.

The men were performing maintenance at Schneider's Milling Inc., 3601 E. Bremer Ave. when they had to be extricated. Waverly firefighters cut into the bin, which contained grain about 8 to 10 feet deep, to extricate them.

Waverly Fire Chief Dennis Happel said he was not clear whether "atmospheric conditions" within the bin cause them to become overcome or trapped.

No information on their condition was released. It was not specified whether the men were employees or contractors or what safety equipment had been utilized.
