March 30--A 4-month-old puppy was being treated at a Duluth veterinary clinic on Saturday after being rescued from a burning building and revived by Superior firefighters on Friday night.
Rush, a beagle or similar breed, was found by crews who responded to the fire in the basement at 1311 N. 23rd St. at 9:19 p.m. Friday. Firefighters reported an active fire in the basement and quickly extinguished the flames.
Crews found the unconscious puppy in the basement, brought it out of the building and administered oxygen to the animal. Rush regained consciousness and was taken by Superior police to a Duluth veterinary clinic.
As of Saturday afternoon, the dog was doing well, Battalion Chief Vern Johnson said. However, effects of smoke inhalation can develop up to 36 hours after exposure, which is why the dog still was being watched, he said.
The residents of the building were not at home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $20,000, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
