Aug. 13--PORTSMOUTH -- Firefighters rescued a man from his bedroom this morning after a fire was sparked in the kitchen of his home in the 1500 block of Cavalier Blvd.
The man was conscious and breathing outside the home, but was taken to a hospital, said Deputy Fire Chief Jim Hoffler. The fire was reported shortly after 1 a.m. and was under control about 15 minutes later.
The man's son was able to get out of the house and was unharmed.
A captain crawled to the bedroom of the home and was able, using a light, to make out a hand in the smoke, Hoffler said. He could see the hand move and knew there was someone on the bed. He carried the man down the hall where a firefighter took over and carried the man out of the house.
"They did a good job getting him out of there," said Hoffler. He did not have an update on the man's condition.
The fire was contained in the kitchen, but there was smoke damage in the rest of the home.
