Dec. 07--Crews from the Spokane Valley Fire Department rescued a young doe from the thin ice of Liberty Lake's McKenzie Bay on Thursday.

"The ice was only about an inch think and we kept breaking through," said Assistant Fire Marshal Bill Clifford.

Rescuers crawled out on the ice on their stomachs and reached the deer on the second try, then fell through the ice on the way back. Firefighters borrowed a long board from a nearby homeowner to complete the rescue.

The deer ran off when it was placed back on dry land.

"It was pretty wet and tired," Clifford said.
