Fla. Firefighter Reunited with Woman She Rescued

Dec. 25, 2015
Paula Ursini rescued a woman from a partially submerged car near Boca Raton.

An off-duty firefighter's instincts kicked in when she jumped into a canal to rescue a woman earlier this month.

“I closed my eyes so I wouldn’t see the water flowing in, flowing in, flowing in,” Jennifer Green told the Palm Beach Post. “I prayed. There was nothing to do but pray.”

Green isn't sure how her car ended up in the waterway along the Florida Turnpike.

Paula Ursini was on her way to work at Boca Raton Fire Rescue on Dec. 1 when she spotted the partially submerged car. She took off her boots and tossed her purse to a safe, dry spot before jumping into the water.

“I had no idea how deep it was until I jumped in and couldn’t feel the bottom," Ursini recalled.

Green's leg was trapped under the seat, but Ursini was able to reach into the car and rescue her.

Once they reach safety, Green exclaimed "My hero."

They watched the car get fully submerged as they awaited emergency responders.

“It was meant to be,” Green said. “This relationship will last forever. I have a true friend.”
