Portland Fire & Rescue crews rescued a person in distress off a bridge after eight hours of negotiations.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews rescued a person in distress from the upper deck of the Fremont Bridge Sunday afternoon.

At about 12:20 p.m., firefighters and police responded to a possible jumper on the bridge.

PF&R sent rope rescue personnel, a rescue craft and a fire boat to assist at the scene.

After seven hours of negotiations, and with great care, the person was successfully removed from bridge which had been closed to traffic as a result of the incident.

While the incident had adversely affected traffic in the area, PF&R said the person is safe and being treated. They also suggest that people in with mental health issues seek help from crisis intervention personnel.
