FFs Clean NC Man's Gutters after Rescuing Him from Roof

Feb. 17, 2020
Gastonia crews were called after a man became nervous when he climbed up to his roof to clean his gutters. Once they got him safely to the ground, firefighters stayed to do the job he couldn't.

Gastonia Fire Department works to serve the community, so firefighters didn't hesitate when an older man needed some help Friday afternoon.

Gastonia Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 were called to a home on the 2700 block of West Franklin Boulevard after the man successfully climbed onto his roof to clean out his gutters, but became nervous soon after.

"He got up and just couldn't get back down," said Gastonia Fire Capt. Bryan Robinson.

Using a stokes basket—a stretcher commonly utilized in rescues with hazardous obstaclesfirefighters cradled the man and brought him to the ground.

However, the man hadn't finished his task.

Gastonia firefighters Jonathan Whisnant and Nick Bumgarner were quick to lend a hand.

"His blower was still on the roof and [they] didn't think twice about it," Robinson said. "We're here to help."
