San Diego Fire Department ground and air units worked together to rescue a hiker who was injured on Cowles Mountain on Sunday.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department helicopter crew rescued a 41-year-old woman who hurt her ankle while hiking on Cowles Mountain on Sunday morning, officials said.

The injury happened about 8:40 a.m. about 100 yards up the popular trail.

When firefighters reached the woman, they called in the rescue helicopter based on the woman's injuries, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief Brian Raines told OnScene TV.

The woman was placed in a full-body harness, hoisted up and loaded into the helicopter, then taken to a landing zone near state Route 52 and Mast Boulevard, where she was transferred to an ambulance, Battalion Chief David Pilkerton said. She was then transported to a hospital.
