Franklin firefighters used ropes and a basket to rescue an injured woman after she saved her 3-year-old, who had plunged into the Harpeth River while sledding.

Tennessee firefighters rescued a mother who was injured while saving her 3-year-old child from a frigid river following a sledding accident Tuesday.

The incident happened some time before 1:30 p.m. in the Forest Crossing subdivision in Franklin. While sledding, the woman's child had gone over an embankment and plunged into the Harpeth River, according to the Franklin Fire Department.

The mother jumped in the water after the 3-year-old and was able to pull the child safely to shore with the help of a bystander. Although the woman made it out of the water, she was injured during the rescue and was unable to climb the steep embankment.

Franklin firefighters were called to the scene, and they used a rope and basket to save the woman. She then was taken to the hospital, while her child was evaluated by medics at the scene before being released to another parent.

Two firefighters also were medically evaluated at the scene for cold exposure after entering the river to help the woman, but they weren't taken to the hospital.
