ROSE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 45-year-old man was rescued Sunday night after he was caught in an auger atop a silo at a farm in Carroll County.

The man was taken to a hospital in Akron after a complicated rescue that took about three hours and involved dozens of emergency workers, according to a news release from the Carrollton Fire Department.

A deputy from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was the first to arrive at the scene. He climbed to the top of the silo and used a tourniquet to slow the victim’s bleeding.

A ladder truck was brought to the scene, as well as the Canton Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team, which set up ropes and rigging to lower the victim to the ground.

Rescuers from multiple departments worked to free the victim, get him bandaged and lower him to the ground, officials said.

A helicopter was brought to the scene to transport the patient to a hospital. However, a change in weather conditions prevented the helicopter from taking off.

Rescuers coordinated with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and the State Highway Patrol to provide an escort for an ambulance so the patient could be taken to a trauma center in Akron as quickly as possible, the news release said.

“This incident involved coordination with both 911 Dispatch Centers at Carroll County and Stark County sheriff’s offices,” the news release said. “This was a large very active and fluid incident that was a heavy lift for both agencies and they handled everything very well. Dispatch is often forgotten about but is a very important puzzle piece in emergency services.”
