May 31 -- WEST BURLINGTON, IA -- A man was rescued Wednesday morning from a grain bin next to a home in rural West Burlington.

The Burlington Fire Department responded at 8:52 a.m. to a call from 13385 Washington Road to find a man trapped up to his armpits in grain, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the Burlington Fire Department.

"The man had been working to move the grain out of the bin when the top crust gave way sending him down into the grain," the statement said.

Firefighters used an access hole on the top of the bin to reach the man, who was not identified. A "specialized interlocking grain tube" was used to stabilize him, then a "slow process" began to remove the grain and get him freed. He was then able to walk out a door in the bin to the ambulance. He was transported to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington for evaluation.

The scene was clear by 11:38 a.m.

The fire department was assisted by West Burlington and Mediapolis fire departments, Des Moines County Sheriff's office and West Burlington Police Department. Des Moines County Secondary Roads provided heavy equipment to help extract the man.
