Chicago Crews Rescue 15 from Elevator
Fifteen people were rescued from an elevator that became stuck Sunday afternoon, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said.
Rescue workers first were called to the building at 819 S. State St. in the Loop about 11 a.m., said Chief Juan Hernandez. It wasn’t immediately clear how long the people were trapped on the inoperable elevator, but about 12:30 p.m., he said efforts were wrapping up.

“The specifics of why the elevator stopped, I don’t have any idea,” Hernandez said.
Of the 15 people who were assisted off the elevator, no one was seriously injured, Hernandez said.
“We rescued several people,” he said, adding that all of them were evaluated by paramedics at the scene and refused additional medical attention.
The building appears to be a mix of residential and commercial business, containing a restaurant and a gym as well as apartments or condos. Hernandez said the elevator was stuck on the fourth floor of the building.
A handwritten sign posted within the building said the elevator was out of order, though it wasn’t clear if it was posted before or after the rescue. Hernandez said he wasn’t aware of any issues with the elevator prior to getting the distress call.
