WA Firefighters Rescue Workers after Walkway Collapse, Fall

Spokane firefighters sifted through rubble to pull out two workers following a walkway collapse and a "long fall" at the construction site for a former motel, according to the department.

Washington firefighters pulled two workers from debris after a "long fall" at a construction site Monday.

Spokane crews responded to the incident shortly after 1:30 p.m. at a former motel that was undergoing construction work, according to the department. Once they reached the scene, they discovered that two workers had been working on or near an elevated walkway extending from the building's north exterior wall. The workers, as well as bricks and heavy building materials, fell when the walkway collapsed.

Firefighters stabilized the building's remaining structural members before entering the rubble to rescue the workers. Both workers were taken to the hospital with severe traumatic injuries.

The incident is under investigation by Washington's Department of Labor and Industries, the department added.
