The large, spreading fire at a scrap metal facilty in Lorton wasn't the only thing facing firefighters Tuesday.
There was an employee trapped in a crane about 40 feet in the air. So, firefighters climbed the ladder on the rig to gain access.
"They packaged him and were able to lower him, utilizing one of our aerial ladders...So leveraging one of our tower ladders, we were able to place a bucket higher, remove the victim to that bucket, and take them to the ground," Fairfax County Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hunt told the media during a press conference.
The worker, who sustained life-threatening injuries, was flown from the scene to an area trauma center.
Six other victims, including a For Belvoir firefighter, also were injured during the extensive operation.
"Obviously, as a scrap metal facility, there are not a lot of hydrants in the back area of the property. So it was necessary for us to establish a water supply. That required a lot of resources," Hunter said, adding that the number of crews was equivalent to four-alarms.
