Birmingham firefighters rescued two women and an infant boy after they were trapped in their overturned vehicle Tuesday morning.

The crash happened shortly before 11 a.m. on Interstate 65 between University Boulevard and Greens Springs Highway. The car was traveling southbound when it left the interstate for unknown reasons and traveled about 20 feet down an embankment before hitting a tree, said BFRS Battalion Chief Sebastian Carrillo.

The victims had to be extricated from the vehicle. Two adult women were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition. The infant boy, Carrillo, said was uninjured.

Two lanes of traffic on I-65 are expected to remain shut down for at least an hour.
