Bees swarmed firefighters and medics after a truck carrying boxes of the insects was struck by an SUV in New Jersey early Sunday.
The collision between the truck and SUV happened at about 1 a.m. in Gloucester County, WPVI-TV reports. More than 50 boxes of bees fell onto the highway, and the crash trapped the SUV's driver.
When some of the boxes opened, the bees swarmed crews working at the scene. Firefighters needed to wear special hooded gear as protection against the bees while extricating the driver from the SUV. The insects even began infesting the ambulance once the driver was being treated.
Crews eventually sprayed down the bees with water keep everyone at the accident site safe. A beekeeper then was brought in to return the insects to their boxes, according to WPVI.
The driver of the SUV was taken to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
