BROCKTON, MA—An injured Taunton woman was trapped in her car for more than a half-hour as firefighters worked feverishly to get her out early Sunday morning following a head-on collision.
The crash occurred about 2:32 a.m. near 142 Summer St., close to the intersection of Irving Street. It was reported as a head-on collision with multiple people possibly trapped in their vehicles.
Firefighters arrived and found one driver, a woman inside a Honda sedan, trapped in her car. The man driving the Subaru sedan involved in the crash was not trapped.
"Crews were involved in a somewhat lengthy extrication," fire Capt. Stephen McLean said.
Firefighters used two sets of the Jaws of Life hydraulic extrication tool to try to free the woman from her car. It took about 35 minutes before she was freed, shortly after 3:05 a.m.
Both drivers were injured and taken by separate Brewster ambulances to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, officials said.
Police say the investigation indicates that a 49-year-old Holbrook man driving the Subaru was heading northbound on Summer Street prior to the crash and a 36-year-old Taunton woman was going south on the same road before the head-on collision.
The Honda, driven by the Taunton woman, crossed the center line and collided with the Subaru, police Lt. Paul Bonanca said.
No charges were filed as of early Sunday afternoon, but police say the crash remains under investigation.
