High winds split a tree down the middle and knocked it into oncoming traffic along Lake Shore Drive, injuring one person.

A large tree fell into traffic along Chicago's Lake Shore Drive on Friday afternoon, damaging at least one car and injuring one person.

High winds split a healthy tree and knocked it into oncoming traffic along the city's Gold Coast, WLS-TV reports. Raw video of the incident shows the tree as it comes crashing down across Lake Shore Drive's northbound lanes.

"The tree came down in the wind," Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. "It made a nice slice down the trunk of the tree. Half of it fell."

At least one car was struck by the falling tree. Another vehicle also was struck by the tree, but it might have been damaged when it was struck by a car.

One person was injured in the incident and taken to the hospital in good condition. Three other people involved in the accident refused treatment.

Fire and city forestry crews worked to cut away the tree and remove it from the traffic lanes. Winds reached 35 mph at O'Hare Airport on Friday, and a high wave warning had shut down most of Chicago's beaches to swimming, according to WLS.
