Asbury Park firefighters extricated a man who was trapped in his vehicle after he backed into a driving school's storefront, injuring one man and narrowly missing another person.

ASBURY PARK, NJA driver trying to park in front of a driving school on Main Street backed into the storefront of the brick building, narrowly missing one of the school's partners and injuring another man in the office, according one of the owners.

Police said it appears the man was trying to parallel park when he struck a curb and ran into the office of ML Driving School at 1014 Main St. The collision brought both police and city firefighters to the scene about 12:20 p.m. Monday.

The driver, who was the only one in the car, was at first stuck inside the vehicle, but he was removed uninjured, said Sgt. Michael Casey, spokesman for the Asbury Park Police Department.

The 1000 block of Main Street was closed during the investigation, which found no structural damage to the building, Casey said.

The driver, who was not named, was issued a ticket for careless driving.

Monnier Lavarin, one of the owners of ML Driving School, said his partner, who came "within an inch of being killed" by the car.

"It was like a bomb," Lavarain said, relating what he heard from his partner and others.

The driver involved in the crash had no connection to the driving school, Lavarin said.

The collision knocked a television off a shelf and scattered other things in the office, he said.

The employee who was hurt suffered a minor injury in the crash, went to a local hospital to get checked out and was released, Lavarin said.

Another person inside was in the office's bathroom at the time of the crash, Lavarin said.

While the office is closed until repairs are made, the school is still operating, Lavarin said.
