MO Students Rescued from Flooded Bus

Kansas City firefighters rescued about 20 students after their school bus became stranded in rising flood waters on Monday morning.

Oct. 08 -- About 20 students had to be rescued Monday morning after their school bus stalled in flood waters south of Swope Park in Kansas City.

The bus, which was headed to Raytown South High School, got stranded on Oldham Road near Gregory Boulevard. Many roads in the Kansas City area were overrun with water as persistent rains caused flash flooding.

“I think our bus driver thought it was a puddle,” said Alexis Novello, who was on the bus with her brother. “But she tried to go through and the water went up as if you were driving a normal car, but it was so much water that she got stuck.”

The bus driver called her company and 911. Firefighters arrived and helped the students exit through the back door.

Alexis had called her parents. As her dad drove to the area, he tried to keep her calm and walk her through options in case the water continued to rise. He eventually made it there and got the children.

During the ordeal, the students on the bus were nervous and moving around, which caused the bus to move a little too, Alexis said.

“I don’t think anybody was noticing how bad it really was until they were starting to look out the windows,” she said. “People were kind of joking about it, but I know people were scared.”

Some roads across the Kansas City area became flooded as rounds of rain continue to sweep across the area, causing creeks and streams to rise out of their banks.

Some areas in south Kansas City have already seen about a foot of rain since the start of the weekend. And more rain is coming over the next two days.
