Tri-Township crews had spotted the whitetailed deer after donning water rescue suits to try to save a dog that had also gone into the partially frozen body of water in St. Charles.

ST. CHARLES, MI—Firefighters from Tri-Township Fire District in western Saginaw County rescued a whitetailed deer from a partially frozen body of water on Sunday, Feb. 16. They were unable to save a man’s dog that had fallen into the same icy water.

About 10:30 a.m. Sunday, firefighters were dispatched for a water rescue of a dog from the Bad River.

Marco Isome, training officer for the Tri-Township Fire District, said a man and his two dogs were near Hulien Road, a dead end, where people go to hunt and fish. Isome said one of the man’s dogs went out onto the ice and water.

A crew arrived at the scene with two personnel in water rescue suits. Shortly after, the firefighters also spotted a deer in distress in the water.

Firefighters retrieved the dog and performed CPR on the pet. Isome said the CPR was unsuccessful and the dog died. The deceased dog was returned to the owner, he said.

The same two firefighters went back into the water to try to rescue the deer.

Isome said the deer was alive when the crew left the scene but was tired.

“It was kind of like shell-shocked from expending that energy,” Isome said.
