MA Crews Rescue Driver after River Plunge

Cambridge firefighters rescued a man after his vehicle crashed through a metal barrier and plunged into the Charles River early Tuesday morning.

A car crashed off a bridge in Cambridge and into the Charles River on Tuesday morning, according to fire officials in the city.

The crash occurred just after 6:30 a.m. near the Western Avenue Bridge and Memorial Drive in Cambridge.

Fire officials said they found a man clinging to a private boat in the river when they responded. The man was rescued by firefighters, treated on scene and taken to a hospital.

A dive team entered the water and searched the vehicle and confirmed no one else was inside.

Photos from the scene, show a car completely submerged in the water as it appeared the vehicle crashed through a metal barrier and into the river.

A heavy police, fire and EMS response has blocked the right lang of Memorial Drive, according to WBZ. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
