Cambridge fire crews helped remove an SUV that crashed into the Charles River after the driver was rescued by a Northeastern crew team on the water.

Crews from the Cambridge Fire Department worked for hours to remove a small SUV that careened into the Charles River on Monday night near Memorial Drive and DeWolfe Street at the Weeks Footbridge, authorities said.

Just after 7:30 p.m., firefighters in Cambridge including the marine unit and divers responded to a report of a vehicle submerged in the Charles River. Authorities said the driver wasn’t injured in the crash.

Several Northeastern University rowing coaches were in the vicinity of the crash and ensured the driver’s safety, according to 7News.

Two coaches were in a nearby crew boat, threw the driver a life vest and were able to pull the person to safety, the report said.

Divers continued to search the water to clear the scene of any other people that may have been in the car, authorities said. At around 10 p.m., the marine unite and diver secured the small SUV to be removed from the water.

At around 10:15, the firefighters had removed the car from the water, authorities said.
