Jul. 21—EAU CLAIRE — A firefighter suffered minor injuries during a water rescue on Wednesday afternoon, according to an Eau Claire Fire Department news release.
At 2:45 p.m., an emergency call notified the Eau Claire Fire Department that four teenagers were clinging to a tree in the Eau Claire River, upstream from the Dewey Street bridge in the city's downtown area.
The teenagers had been floating on inner tubes on the river, but encountered difficulties and needed help getting safely ashore.
Firefighters and police officers were able to get flotation devices and ropes to the stranded tubers. Three of the teens were pulled to shore by crews while the fourth floated downstream to a waiting fire department rescue boat.
The teens were all safely rescued, only suffering minor bumps and bruises.
A firefighter who was positioned on the steep shoreline was injured when a rock fell onto his head, shoulders and back.
In Wednesday's news release, the Fire Department reminded water enthusiasts that local rivers can be very dangerous, especially near fallen trees and brush.
