Lyons firefighters used boats to rescue at least nine people and two dogs after a branch of the Des Plaines River flooded neighborhoods following heavy rainfall.

Suburban Chicago firefighters navigated flooded streets by boat to rescue several people trapped in their homes by the high water Sunday night.

At least nine people and two dogs were rescued by Lyons firefighters after Salt Creek, which is a branch of the Des Plaines River, overflowed from heavy rain, Chief Gordon Nord told WGN-TV. Brookfield firefighters also helped by checking on residents.

“This will be an ongoing operation until we go to each house in that little area that’s ours,” Nord told WEGN.
