Indianapolis firefighters recovered a boater's $20,000 prosthetic leg from a reservoir over the weekend.
Rescue divers from the department's Tactical Team 7 had been conducting training at Geist Reservoir when Indiana Department of Natural Resources officers asked if they could help them find a woman's missing artificial limb, WXIN-TV reports. Amy Gillum had become distracted while boating with her daughter and let the titanium/carbon fiber leg fall overboard in a part of the reservoir called "Family Cove."
"Without hesitation, the crew gathered their dive equipment from the rescue truck and hopped into DNR's boat," Battalion Chief Rita Reith said in a statement.
Three divers dealt with zero visibility as they searched the bottom of the reservoir. After about 20 minutes, the leg was found about 100 yards from shore and around 20 feet down.
The firefighters returned the leg to the woman, who was grateful for their help.
“They were the most selfless group of men that were so willing to help," Gillum told WTHR-TV. "They were just absolutely amazing.”
“Something is coming Tuesday," she added. "I hear that is their next shift, so I already checked into that."
