A body camera video captured New York firefighter and police pulling a woman from frigid river waters Wednesday, a rescue that sent two officers to the hospital.
Tarrytown police and firefighters responded shortly after 10:15 a.m. to a report of a woman who had jumped into the Hudson River at RiverWalk Park, the Westchester Journal News reports. When first responders reached the scene, they found the woman struggling about 20 feet from land.
Police Sergeants Joseph Barosa and Chris Caolli, along with firefighter Scott Weaver Jr., attached a harness to the woman in order to guide her to an area that would allow her to get to shore. She eventually reached a ladder that had been put in the water by rescuers and was able to climb out. The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Because of the difficult terrain, Barosa, Caolli and Weaver needed to get in the freezing water for the rescue. Barosa and Caolli were taken to the hospital, and Police Chief John Barbelet told the Journal News they were OK.
The rescue was the first footage recorded by Tarrytown police body cameras. The cameras were rolled out Monday, and select officers are field testing them before the rest of the department is equipped with them, the Journal News added.
