More than 100 Girl Scouts and leaders were rescued as waters rose around their campground Tuesday.

Swift water technicians and firefighters from several Allegheny County fire and rescue departments responded to the McCandless park.

"It started to rain really hard and we continued to cook, but then they blew the emergency horn," said Girl Scout Adelyn Huey told KDKA.

The group grabbed their food as the deluge continued and ran to a cabin. But, they were evacuated from there soon thereafter.

The call for help for the stranded Girl Scouts resulted in a large response from area crews including swift water technicians, rescue personnel and firefighters.

Each person was outfitted with a personal flotation vest and a helmet before the procession out of the water started with them holding onto the person in front of them and a rope.

"It was like flooding and then all the firefighters came and carried us and walked with us to the other side," said Girl Scout Sonja DeLuca.
