A boy was found dead after being swept into a drainage pipe in Mount Airy during Thursday’s storm, according to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department.

The boy had been playing with a group of other children during the flash flood around 5:20 p.m. in the 200 block of Watersville Road, according to department spokesperson Doug Alexander.

“We got a call for a subject in the water,” Alexander said. “There was a gully that filled up with water, about waist deep. He got caught up in the flow and got washed into a pipe that goes underneath the street.”

The pipe is connected to a stormwater detention pond. A bystander found the boy’s body. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Alexander said.

Mount Airy police are investigating the death.
